Decorative plants and bird, Waddesdon Manor Gardens

The twirling ironwork of the small fence gives some decoration to the bottom and the big bird adds a suitable and entertaining topping. The distant trees and the bird's head have been 'managed' to make sure there is a clean edge at the top. In stripe joiners, rather like pans, you think of beginnings and ends. Not every picture needs to be contained. The world, after all, is bigger than can fit in a photograph. But with long rectangles you feel you feel there is a greater need to suggest to the viewer why it is the shape it is.
