August 2017 - THIS week's PICTURE
Smithsonian Cubist Gallery, DC: 4 takes, #1 photo by Malcolm Aslett
How glad I am in these enlightened times that some galleries (the better ones) allow you to take photos of their wares. It gives me a chance to enjoy myself taking pictures of the event rather than substandard photos with unlikely colour matching of the objects themselves. Bizarre that we live in a world where people can not only own an object but also the representation of the item - the momentary history of light photons bouncing off it. Human beings are nuts. The Smithsonian is one of the good guys/persons in this matter. And etc. with the social comment. Back to the photo. Love Cubist stuff, especially the Braque/Picasso originals. That they took it back to the beginning, lines and shapes on a flat surface. So my first instinct in these situations is to have a flat wall. I've done this on many occassions. Photograph parallel. Then you have the people looking at them, or the other objects in the room. A gallery is primarily about looking as far as a photograph is concerned. I think. The objects are incidentals. This was a manageable enough space to include left and right walls and this essentially 'makes' the photo. That and the floor return us to the world of perspective. This is the simplest and most straightforward of four images I constructed of this space. Enough to get an idea of the works and the space. The wooden floor is always a treat to do. No need to straighten every board as the slight zig zagging is appealing to me. One person studying an image, one person balancing off the right expanse. I have a fondness for the right hand corner as I recognize my eye and brain have a tug of war with it, where the issue is whether the floor line bends in or out - visually we can prove with ease that the base line falls to the right of the vertical but I find my experience oriented brain wishing to interpret it as coming in towards me as if I was observing a perspective square on the ground. If you get what I mean? Version #2 in a couple of days. |
