Appomattox, Virginia
The place where the American Civil War ended in 1866. Here are a few joiners of this historic site where Robert E. Lee signed the surrender at the Mclean home near the Appomattox Court House (there was no peace treaty signed here, which might explain why some folk south of the Mason Dixie are still able to express a mild antagonism to the North). Like many of these tenderly cared for sites underwhelmed by visitors it can have a still and ghostly feel to it, the buildings spaced from one another in no particular order with the odd uniformed reb soldier making his way along the dirt paths in the bold Virginia sunshine.
