Gettysburg scenes : photo by Malcolm Aslett
I was looking through some old folders and found these ones form Gettysburg which I liked. I think that what matches the subject is detail. The battlefield town is so infected with the idea of fact and detail, a raking of the coals over every item for the American obsession of the Civil War. Religious fervour meets, well, war. In a rather polite way. The peeling paint, the lichened walls, the tended grass and marble monuments to Units rather then Men. The landscape is both wild and lovingly tended and the skies pretty much the same as they would have been. The main photo has a ridiculous sky. It is such a patchwork. The buildings are not so much neglected as existing with only the purpose of being shells for eyes roaming battle landscapes. Good they are kept. A pity they are not finding a better use other than a reminder of things America has a hard time making its mind up about. |
