January 2013 - THIS week's PICTURE

St Augustine Street, FL : photo by Malcolm Aslett

How much cooler would towns be in the US of A if Spaniards had built their people-friendly streets and plazas to stroll in on warm evenings?

This is a slice of St Augustine in Florida, one of the earliest European settlements on mainland America. It took about ten or fifteen photos to get the spread from wall to wall. Colour values varied a lot in the ground and rather than changing them I decided to emphasize the differences. And while I've been doing more faceting in images recently I decided on using rectangles on specific points of interest here. I changed light and colour values too, because I could. I notice in photography in general it is becoming more acceptable to mess with tone and colour. As more people become capable in Photoshop-type programs this will only increase. In this instance it isn't to fool the spectator into believing the photographer has somehow captured an extraordinary moment of light and matter but to remind them of the artificiality of the substance of photography.
