July 2011 - THIS week's PICTURE

A Smaller Splash: Joiner photograph by Malcolm Aslett

Taken from a standing position by the pool and looking all around. This results in a choice of horizon lines and the self-conscious decision to have the pool tipping over. I purposefully avoided making all the lines curves so as to offset the brain interpreting the scene as a wide angle shot (OK, some will still see it that way, but there should be some nagging doubt due to the hard and straight edges). Tom is seen in a series of shots jumping into the pool and swimming back to the side. It provides a small narrative and allows for other references to be made - a gracious nod to David Hockney who had an early success with his paintings The Splash and A Bigger Splash which use swimming pools and mix it up with painterly stuff about abstraction, reality and representation.

No idea if it comes off as a photo but don't you just love that mesh of blue and white that swimming pools become?

Below are two further images to indicate the detail of the image which is of course much larger than what it appears above.
